# License plates

> Repaint the background or the normal map of a plate style, and know which cars the change reaches.

A **License plate** edit repaints one of the game's plate styles. The result has not been confirmed in game yet, so test it on your server before you rely on it.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The edit applies to every car using the selected texture. A normal map can be shared by several plate styles, so editing it changes all of those styles.

## Edit a plate

**1. Choose the plate**

In **New edit**, select **License plate**. There is no model list: the plate backgrounds are listed first, then the plate normals. Click one and click **Continue**.

**2. Paint**

The stage shows the plate with its text area outlined, and the 3D pane shows the Adder wearing it. Add layers ([Layers and tools](/projects/texturing/layers-and-tools.md)).

**3. Export**

The export replaces the plate dictionary. In game, a vehicle picks its style with `SetVehicleNumberPlateTextIndex(veh, style)`.

You can also switch the edit to **In game** in the header, so `rageon-bridge` swaps the plate while the server runs ([Model and global textures](/projects/texturing/model-textures.md#deliver-the-texture-in-game)).

## Troubleshooting

> **No plate template: …**
>
> The plate guide could not be prepared. You can still edit and export the texture, but the text-area guide is unavailable. Check the result in game.

> **No 3D preview: …**
>
> The Adder is missing from the game assets, so the preview cannot load. The edit still opens on the 2D stage.
